Health update from the Norwegian royal family: Queen Sonja was successfully fitted with a pacemaker after suffering from atrial fibrillation.
The Norwegian palace announced good news about the health of Queen Sonja (87) in a statement. The monarch was hospitalized on January 11 after suffering from atrial fibrillation during a ski trip in Lillehammer. “Her Majesty the Queen had a pacemaker implanted today,” it said on January 16.
The procedure went well
The upcoming operation was announced on January 14th. The following day, the Queen was admitted to Rikshospitalet, the University Hospital in Oslo, for preparation.
In the first communication about the situation, the court had already emphasized that the situation was not serious and that Sonja was in good shape. This assessment has apparently been confirmed. “The procedure was successful and the Queen is doing well,” the palace continued. As previously announced, the 87-year-old would now have to stay in the ward for another day or two for observation and then be allowed to return home.
King Harald also has a pacemaker
Queen Sonja’s pacemaker operation raises a major parallel with her husband. Norway’s King Harald (87) also already has the electronic pulse generator, which is supposed to ensure a stable heart rate, in his chest. The pacemaker was inserted about a year ago, in February 2024. He also had to cut short a vacation for the operation. Two months later, the 87-year-old was back in full action for the Norwegian krone without any restrictions.
