“The Pope”: ARD remake with Jella Haase
ARD wants to remake the bestseller “The Pope” as a series. The historical material should be “modern and cheeky”.
The bestseller “The Pope” is being made into a new film – this time as a series and with 32-year-old actress Jella Haase (“Fack ju Göhte”) in the leading role. It is one of ARD’s big fictional projects this year.
Christoph Pellander from the ARD feature film subsidiary Degeto and film producer Oliver Berben presented the project at the ARD program presentation for 2025 in Hamburg. Johanna Wokalek was seen in the title role in the 2009 film.
“The Pope” is a historical novel by the US author Donna Woolfolk Cross from 1996. The author uses the material of the legendary medieval Pope Joan, whose existence is controversial.
The new version will be “modern and cheeky” with clear references to our present, said Berben.
