Steven Spielberg says goodbye to a “dreamer” and one of his heroes, David Lynch.
The family of David Lynch (1946-2025) has announced that the cult director has died at the age of 78. Condolences from stars, friends and fans quickly piled up. Another legendary filmmaker from the dream factory, Steven Spielberg (78), is not just saying goodbye to a colleague.
Steven Spielberg loved David Lynch’s films
For Spielberg, as well as for countless film fans around the world, the death of David Lynch is a great loss. “I loved David’s films. ‘Blue Velvet,’ ‘Mulholland Drive’ and ‘The Elephant Man’ defined him as a unique, visionary dreamer who made films that felt handmade,” the director said in a statement to US Industry magazine.
He met Lynch when he took on the role of John Ford for Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans”, which was released in 2022. “Here was one of my heroes, David Lynch, playing one of my heroes,” the 78-year-old remembers. “It was surreal and seemed like a scene from one of David’s own films. The world will miss such an original and unique voice.”
Other fellow directors also spoke out shortly after Lynch’s death. “Rest in peace, David Lynch. You have inspired so many of us,” wrote the “Guardians of the Galaxy” director and . Ron Howard (70): “A kind man and fearless artist who followed his heart and soul and proved that radical experimentation can produce unforgettable cinema.”
