Not many filmmakers are fans of the future US president. Mel Gibson has named Trump his “special ambassador” to Hollywood.
US President-elect Donald Trump (78) has appointed Hollywood stars Sylvester Stallone (78), Mel Gibson (69) and Jon Voight (86) as his “special ambassadors” in the US dream factory. Trump wrote on Thursday that the three filmmakers “will be my eyes and ears and I will do what they suggest.”
“Great but very problematic place”
His aim is to “bring back Hollywood, which has lost a lot of business to foreign countries in the last four years – bigger, better and stronger than ever before!” He also described the US film industry, primarily based in Los Angeles, as “a great but very problematic place.” He now wants to help Hollywood enter a new “Golden Age”. In film history, this period generally refers to the era from the introduction of sound films in the early 1930s to the end of the studio system and the beginning of New Hollywood cinema in the 1960s.
Two-time Oscar winner Gibson, who was appointed by Trump as a special ambassador, said he learned about his new role from Truth Social. “I received the tweet at the same time as all of you and was just as surprised. Nevertheless, I answered the call. My duty as a citizen is to provide whatever help and insight I can,” Gibson said in a statement.
Donald Trump can be sure of their loyalty
The star, who recently lost his home in the devastating California wildfires, jokingly added: “Is there a chance the position comes with an ambassadorial residence?”
Gibson, Voight and Stallone have in the past stood out as supporters of the next US president. “She has the IQ of a fence post,” said the new special ambassador Gibson about US Vice President Kamala Harris (60) just a few weeks ago, before the US election in early November 2024. Voight, the father of Hollywood star Angelina Jolie (49), years ago described Trump as the best US president since Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865). In November, Stallone compared the Republican to his well-known film character Rocky Balboa and Jesus.
