The extensive career of Jeannot Szwarc
Born in Paris in 1939, Szwarc graduated from Harvard University and earned a reputation as a television program director in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1978, he directed Shark 2 the sequel to the movie Steven Spielberg that brought back the original star Roy Scheider in the lead role. It was a box office hit, and the film’s tagline “Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water…” became iconic among film fans ever since.
He also directed Supergirl (1984), a spin-off of Christopher Reeve’s Superman films, starring Helen Slater and Faye Dunaway like the villain Although it was not a success, it has since become a cult film.
The following year, he made Santa Claus: The Movie, a Christmas film starring Dudley Moore which, although it was not successful in the United States, was well received in other parts of the world.
Szwarc would return to television in his later years, directing episodes of Supernatural, scandal and Designated Survivor of Netflix. His last directing credit was an episode of Grey’s Anatomy in 2019.
