Ecuador elections: polarized scenario and favoritism for the opponent Luisa González

The main opponent, Luisa González, leads the polls ahead of the first round in Ecuador. The scenario is a hyperpolarized context.

Ecuador will elect its new president for the next four years on February 9. Daniel Noboacurrent president, and Luisa Gonzalezthe main opposition, concentrate almost 88% of voting intentions, according to a latest survey carried out by the Argentine researcher Shila Vilker.

According to their studies, the binomial González-Borja leads the voting intention with an advantage of eight percentage points over the formula Noboa-Pinto.

“Everything is organized around this hyperpolarization, the two great forces that today are contesting the electoral scene, do so somewhat at the expense of all the third offers (…) we are in a scene of great intensity around the two candidates ( Luisa González and Daniel Noboa)”Vilker expressed in dialogue with Radio Pichincha.

An interesting fact that is presented in the report is the change of government or continuity of the same: 48% of Ecuadorians want to change the president, while 41% choose continuity, although 20% of that number demands improvements in the management.

In case of a possible second roundthe outlook favors Luisa González with 51% and 43% for Noboa. Even the “I would never vote for him” of the opposition candidate (41%) is lower than that of the current president of Ecuador (53%), which is key if a second round is reached.

Shila Vilker He highlighted that this survey is a snapshot of the current moment and the undecided will be key to defining the winner of the election, who usually become active in the last week before the elections.

Regarding the main concerns that the country is going through, the researcher highlighted the issues of security and economy: “Economy and violence are like the two big issues in the electoral process of Ecuador”.
