The agricultural sector insists on a meeting with Luis Caputo: “It is time for a reduction in withholdings”

The last meeting of the Liaison Tablewhere different representations of the agricultural productive sectorsconcluded with an exclusive priority: arrange a meeting with the Minister of Economy, Luis Caputoto insist on the demand for the elimination of withholdings for farm exports.

In this framework, the president of the Agricultural Intercooperative Confederation Limited (Coninagro), Lucas Magnanostated that “it is time for a reduction in withholdings”: “The request comes as a result of the complaints received from the producers and beyond that due to a logical issue of a rearrangement that occurred in the economy.”

Then he detailed: “Relative prices have readjusted in a way that has hit very hard in the equation of agricultural production and annexed to this with a dramatic drop in prices internationallythat with the withholdings that there are particularly in Argentina today make the majority of these productions be with numbers in red”.

In dialogue with Radio 10, Magnano acknowledged that “at the moment we have not received a response” from the Ministry of Economy for his request for a meeting, but was optimistic: “In the next few days we will receive it and I have no doubt that the minister will surely receive us.”

“It seems to me that it is time for a reduction in withholdings and a fiscal reconfiguration in Argentina. The numbers say so, the field in the last 20 years has set aside more than US$230,000 million and that is missing for all the productions and the chain to continue investing and improving,” he said.

Finally, he analyzed the current management: “We see the lack of taking measureswhich a priori they had promised that they were going to be fulfilled and in the meantime they were doing it in dribs and drabs and very little. “It seems to me that it is an ideal setting to discuss them. The removal of withholdings seems to me to be one of the points, not only because we as entities are devaluing, but because the producers ask us to,” he concluded.

In search of eliminating withholdings, the field will ask Luis Caputo for a meeting

The Liaison Table will request an audience with the Minister of Economy, Luis Caputo, and the Secretary of Agriculture, Sergio Iraetato address the serious crisis that the agricultural sector is going through. The current situation, marked by low international prices, a historic drought and withholdingshas producers in an unsustainable position, which led rural entities to take urgent measures.

The key meeting to define the request was held at the headquarters of the Argentine Rural Confederations (CRA) at 600 México Street. There, the presidents of the four entities that make up the Liaison Table: Carlos Castagnani (CRA), Nicolás Pino (Argentine Rural Society), Andrea Sarnari (Argentine Agrarian Federation) and Lucas Magnano (Coninagro)decided to move forward with a joint demand for the elimination of Export Duties (DEX) and measures that alleviate the growing costs of the sector.

The CEEA did not rule out – once the meeting with Caputo and Iraeta had occurred – requesting a hearing with Javier Milei, however they estimate that a priori “it is essential to know what the real possibilities of removing withholdings are.”

After the meeting, Carlos Castagnani, host and president of CRA, explained that “Due to the current drought, the retentions can no longer hold up. It is urgent that the retentions be eliminated so that the producer can continue to be productive and generate development throughout the country.”

He also detailed that “The request for a hearing is because times have accelerated. We represent producers, we convey the discomfort in the sense of the concern they have. If our best partner, the climate, does not accompany us, we will ask the other partner (the state) to also accompany us. The ideal would be the elimination of withholdings, but hey, that’s what the technical team of the Liaison Table will be working to exchange ideas to see how it can be achieved.”
