Reports: Israel releases prisoners after hostages are handed over

As part of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Islamist Hamas, around 1,900 Palestinian prisoners are to be released from Israeli prisons. The first ones have now been released.

Following the release of three Israeli hostages by Hamas, Israel released 90 Palestinians from detention in accordance with the Gaza Agreement. This was reported by the “Times of Israel” that night, citing the Israeli prison authorities. Most of them are women and minors. The majority of prisoners come from the West Bank, others from East Jerusalem. Palestinian reports said some were taken to Ramallah and others to their homes in East Jerusalem.

Videos on social media showed people near Ramallah cheering as the white buses arrived. Israel reportedly wanted to stop celebrations after the release of Palestinian prisoners.

A ceasefire in the Gaza Strip between Israel and Hamas had previously come into force in the morning, almost three hours late. It should initially apply for six weeks. During this time, a total of 33 hostages will be exchanged for 1,904 Palestinian prisoners. The Islamist Hamas released the first three female Israeli hostages in the afternoon.
