The palace congratulates Princess Ingrid Alexandra on her 21st birthday with five photos. Will she be playing more for the Royals soon?
Finally some good news from the beleaguered Norwegian royal family: Princess Ingrid Alexandra will be 21 years old on January 21st. To mark the occasion, the palace published several photos of the future heir to the throne. They show these during their military training, but also at private events. Meanwhile, royal experts assume that the now 21-year-old will soon take on further royal duties.
Happy during military service and at her little brother’s side
In the first picture, the princess is beaming in military uniform in front of a tank. She can also be seen during a maneuver in the forest. There are also snapshots from a summer boat trip and a ski tour. A fifth picture shows her with her brother Prince Sverre Magnus (19). The siblings sit next to each other in elegant clothing. “Happy birthday, Princess Ingrid Alexandra! The princess, who is currently doing her military service with the Norwegian Armed Forces, turns 21,” the pictures say.
How and where the princess will spend her special day was not announced. She will probably be staying at the Skjold camp in Tromsø, where she has been undergoing military training for a year. Last year she celebrated her 20th birthday in the military camp – the first time without her family.
According to various royal observers, she will want to rely more on the young woman in the future. Because: The Norwegian royals could really use personnel reinforcements from the popular figure. The royal family has been plagued by some worries for some time. On the one hand, there are health problems. Queen Sonja (87) is currently recovering at home from an operation. King Harald’s wife (87) had a pacemaker implanted. The king also received a pacemaker last year and has been slowing down ever since. Ingrid Alexandra’s mother Mette-Marit (51) has been suffering from chronic pulmonary fibrosis for years, which is why she occasionally misses appointments.
Health concerns and scandals surrounding Ingrid’s stepbrother
“The royal household is now so understaffed that it is no longer able to fulfill all of its tasks, while at the same time it is in a serious crisis of confidence,” says royal expert Trond Norén Isaksen. Between the end of her military training in April and the start of her studies in the summer, the princess could therefore take on more appointments for the royal family.
Ingrid Alexandra is the eldest daughter of Crown Prince Haakon (51) and his wife Mette-Marit, who have been married since 2001. In addition to Ingrid Alexandra, the couple also has son Sverre Magnus. Mette-Marit brought her first-born son Marius Borg Høiby (28) from a previous relationship into the marriage. He has been causing dramatic scandals since the summer of 2024. Several women made serious allegations against him. He is said to have behaved abusively and was arrested several times.
