Musician Garth Hudson, the last founding member of The Band, has died at the age of 87.
Garth Hudson (1937-2025) died on January 21st at the age of 87. The musician, born in Windsor, Canada, was known, among other things, as a member of The Band. Until his death, Hudson was the last surviving founding member of the group, which became famous with hits such as “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” and “The Weight”.
Hudson’s estate executor said the multi-instrumentalist – including keyboard, organ and saxophone – died in his sleep this morning in a nursing home in Woodstock, New York. Jan Haust, a long-time friend and colleague of the deceased, also reported that the musician had fallen asleep peacefully.
Garth Hudson: Mourning the loss of “a musical genius”
Hudson’s death was later confirmed. “Today we unfortunately say goodbye to Garth ‘Honey Boy’ Hudson, the last living original member of The Band,” it says on several pictures. He was “a musical genius and cornerstone of the group’s timeless sound.” “I found true joy in helping people get to the bottom of their feelings,” Hudson once said. And that’s exactly what he did with his music, as the article says.
One of The Band’s most famous songs, “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”, is particularly known in Germany as a cover version – as “On the day when Conny Kramer died” by Juliane Werding (68), first published in 1972.
