Naomi Watts had her breakthrough role in David Lynch’s 2001 thriller Mulholland Drive. Before the recently deceased cult director gave her the role, she actually wanted to leave Hollywood.
British-Australian actress Naomi Watts says she only stayed in Hollywood after a decade of unsuccessful castings thanks to her encounter with the late director David Lynch. “It went badly, I just failed at auditions for ten years,” said the 56-year-old about her attempts at acting in the 90s on the talk show “Live with Kelly and Mark”.
She explained that at some point her desperation was so noticeable that it made people uncomfortable. “I had several plans to return home,” explained the actress, who was born in Britain and later grew up in Australia.
But with a casting with Lynch, the tide turned for her, she said. At the time she was sure that she was “not the right one”. “But he just saw me and somehow managed to lift those facades of mine.” Lynch gave Watts the lead role in his mystery thriller “Mulholland Drive” (2001), which was critically acclaimed and gave Watts his breakthrough.
The cult director died last week at the age of 78. Last summer, Lynch announced that he was suffering from emphysema as a long-time smoker. After “Mulholland Drive”, he and Watts also worked together on the short film series “Rabbits” (2002) and the third season of the series “Twin Peaks” (2017).
