The amount of compensation has been determined: Prince Harry will receive millions from “The Sun”. This was agreed upon at the last second.
The British tabloid “The Sun” not only apologized “fully and unequivocally” to Prince Harry (40) for illegal wiretapping methods and surveillance. As has now been announced, the Duke of Sussex will also receive immense financial compensation: the payment amounts to more than 10 million British pounds, the equivalent of almost 12 million euros.
The agreement was reached literally at the last minute before the trial began. Due to the eight-hour time difference to California, where Harry lives, the negotiations dragged on into the night. According to British media reports, the visibly annoyed Judge Fancourt forced the parties to agree with clear words: “The trial begins today.”
“Monumental victory” against Murdoch empire
Harry’s lawyer David Sherborne called the agreement a “monumental victory.” The publisher used more than 100 private detectives illegally more than 35,000 times over at least 16 years – with the knowledge of the leading editors. The Duke was one of the last remaining plaintiffs out of an original 39 people. Stars like Hugh Grant (64) had already settled beforehand in order to avoid millions in legal costs.
“As a direct result of his lawsuit, Harry and his immediate family have endured aggressive and vindictive reporting,” his attorney said. This has led to serious security concerns. The publisher also apologized for the impact of the intense coverage on Harry’s personal life and that of his late mother Diana (1961-1997). With this agreement, the royal himself avoids potentially millions in legal fees.
