Benedict Cumberbatch talks about a narcissistic preoccupation with himself in a conversation about his new film.
In a new interview, Benedict Cumberbatch (48) talks about the future of his Marvel role Doctor Strange, his new drama and why he doesn’t compare himself to Brad Pitt (61) or Leonardo DiCaprio (50). With the status of a sex symbol and classifies this as “strangely navel-gazing”. An excessive preoccupation with oneself that doesn’t suit the Brit.
Over the years, the actor has appeared in more than one “Sexiest Man Alive” issue of People magazine. A circumstance he cannot understand.
“I’m not Brad, I’m not Leonardo, I’m not your typical movie star. People have asked themselves, ‘Why is he even attractive to us?'” Cumberbatch said when asked about how he was viewed as a sex symbol. “But guessing and trying to understand that is so… weird navel-gazing for me. I don’t sit around and think, ‘Why am I sexy?’ “I worry when I look in the mirror as I age, just like everyone else.”
“Being a celebrity is derogatory”
The actor, who has three sons with his wife, theater director Sophie Hunter (46), is also not a fan of the idea that he is a “celebrity”. “It’s so derogatory and lumps all the famous people together,” says the Englishman. “Am I a ‘celebrated’ person? And for what? Because I sell cheese? Because I appear on a reality show? Because I did something outrageous? For being an actor?”
However, he is proud of his new film “The Thing with Feathers,” which premieres on Friday, January 24th at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah. In the drama, Cumberbatch portrays a man grieving the death of his wife and struggling to care for his two young children. He loses touch with reality and imagines “that he and his children are being terrorized by a monstrous crow.”
Doctor Strange is coming back
In his cult role as Doctor Strange, Benedict Cumberbatch will not return in “Avengers: Doomsday” in 2026, but in “Avengers: Secret Wars” (2027) and for a possible third solo film, he announced in an interview with “Variety”.
