Germany made it into the Oscar race with “The Seed of the Holy Fig Tree.” The film by the Iranian Mohammad Rasoulof is one of five contenders in the International Feature Film category.
The drama “The Seed of the Sacred Fig Tree” by the Hamburg-based Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulof has been nominated for an Oscar in Germany in the International Feature Film category. This was announced by the Film Academy in Los Angeles.
The film is about the mass protests in Iran following the death of the young Kurdish woman Jina Mahsa Amini in September 2022. The focus is on a married couple with two teenage daughters. The gripping drama was mainly produced in Germany and could therefore be entered into the running for the country. After charges and threats of imprisonment, Rasoulof left Iran last spring and now lives in Hamburg.
In addition to Germany, films from France (“Emilia Pérez”), Brazil (“I’m Still Here”), Latvia (“Flow”) and Denmark (“The Girl with the Needle”) are also represented.
Last year, director Ilker Çatak’s drama “The Teacher’s Room” made it into the Oscar finals for Germany, and German director Wim Wenders was also nominated for Japan with “Perfect Days.” In the end, the Oscar for best international film went to the British production “The Zone of Interest”. In 2023, Edward Berger’s German literary adaptation “All Quiet in the West” won four Oscars, including in the International Feature Film category.
