Tom Selleck, Elvis Presley, even Brad Pitt: If stars want to look casual, they throw on a colorfully patterned Hawaiian shirt. These are the most famous flower men.
Hawaiian shirts have long had the reputation of being a men’s joke made from textiles. Too loud, too flashy, too often assigned to old white men. Some people might immediately think of Jürgen von der Lippe, the German comedian who never goes on stage without a hibiscus shirt and jokes with ambiguous humor.
But we don’t want to be unfair: the Hawaiian shirt is of course much more than a stylish men’s top. After all, it was once made famous by Elvis, Harry S. Truman and “Magnum” star Tom Selleck. It became popular in the 1930s. Resourceful Hawaiians sold the colorful floral shirts as souvenirs to advertise their archipelago. The aloha feeling quickly spread around the world and not only established the surfer’s paradise as a place of longing, but also a casual fashion style.
Hawaiian shirt? A very serious matter
It is now even well received by luxury brands. Prada and Gucci celebrate the cheerful floral wearer in their collections next summer. Jan Köppen is one of those people. The presenter now once again comments colorfully and bitingly on the TV spectacle “Jungle Camp” on RTL (including the star heard). But he and his shirts don’t have to worry about jokes. Others will do that.
