National coach extends contract until 2028

Julian Nagelsmann remains beyond the upcoming World Cup German national coach. He extended his contract with the DFB until 2028.

Julian Nagelsmann (37) will remain national coaches of the men’s national football team for at least three years. Like the German Football Association (DFB) on Friday morning, Nagelsmann signed a contract valid until 2028.

He will be preserved the national team at least until the 2028 European Championship in Great Britain and Ireland as a national coach. His contract was originally valid in Canada, Mexico and the USA until after the 2026 World Cup.

According to DFB President Bernd Neuendorf, Nagelsmann’s contract extension is “a very special signal, especially in view of our 125th anniversary of the association”. One does not want to “rest on the success of the past, but rather to work on new work”. Nagelsmann fills the office of national coach with sporting expertise, but also a “fine feeling for the team and the fans” perfectly.

Julian Nagelsmann wants the title

Julian Nagelsmann was appointed national coach in September 2023 after coaching stations at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, RB Leipzig and FC Bayern Munich, where he followed Hansi Flick. The 37-year-old is cited that he would initially not imagine that he would extend the contract that was valid until the home European Championships 2024.

“Our big goal was a successful tournament. But at the time I couldn’t imagine what the national team means to the people in Germany. How many hearts they reach and move,” said Nagelsmann. “This great feedback that we all, not only me, get every day shows us that our way together is right. And it is not yet over.” A big goal is now a joint title win: “We all have created something together – fans, team and team of coaches – that we want to develop successfully now. We want to win titles together.”
