Carey Mulligan: “Singing is wonderful”

In the comedy “The Ballad of Wallis Island” Carey Mulligan plays an indie folk singer. In real life, she leaves the singing to her husband – and regularly gets private concerts.

The British actress Carey Mulligan (“Promising Young Woman”) loves to sing and sings well, as she proves in the comedy “The Ballad of Wallis Island”. But she doesn’t want to turn it into a second career. “My voice isn’t strong enough for that. It’s not enough for concerts,” she told the German Press Agency at the Sundance Festival in Park City. The film by director James Griffiths premiered there on Saturday (local time).

In “The Ballad of Wallis Island” Mulligan plays a folk singer who meets her former bandmate Herb McGwyer (Tom Basden) again after many years of radio silence. The two were booked by eccentric lottery winner Charles Heath (Tim Key) for a private concert on a remote island. Heath hopes his favorite duo will team up again. But for Herb and Nell, singing together opens up old wounds.

“Singing is wonderful – especially in a small setting like in this film,” said Mulligan at the festival in Utah. “But I’m not a fan of big, crowded events with lots of people. I like going to my husband’s performances – but to be honest, I prefer private concerts in my kitchen. And I get them regularly.” Mulligan is married to Marcus Mumford, the frontman of the British folk rock band Mumford & Sons.
