Not infrequently one felt reminded of ghost towns. But after the Corona easing, the shopping streets are slowly filling up again.
The easing of the corona-related sales restrictions are creating more life in the city centers. This is based on figures from the company Hystreet, which specializes in measuring visitor frequencies in shopping streets.
In the ten largest German cities, the number of shoppers is now back to an average of 72 percent of the pre-crisis level.
Hystreet compares the numbers of the past four Saturdays with those of May / June 2019. In February 2021, when a far-reaching lockdown was in effect, the number of passers-by was only 17 percent of February 2019, Hystreet announced.
The return of passers-by was not the same everywhere. In Düsseldorf (Schadowstrasse), according to the information, 92 percent of the pre-crisis level was reached, in Hamburg (Spitalerstrasse) it was an average of 80 percent over the past four Saturdays. The numbers in Munich (Neuhauser Strasse) with 57 percent and Berlin (Kurfürstendamm) with 55 percent were lower.
“The swan song to the liveliness of the inner cities and the stationary retail, which was often heard during the high phase of the pandemic, was obviously very premature,” said Hystreet managing director Nico Schröder, commenting on the figures.
