Royal joke: Angela Kelly pranked the Queen

Queen Elizabeth II

This employee has courage: Elizabeth II’s longtime assistant once played a nasty prank on her queen. The Queen immediately retaliated.

Angela Kelly was once the Queen’s personal assistant and apparently also the court jester. Kelly was in Her Majesty’s service for 25 years and then even wrote, with the Queen’s consent, the book “The Other Side Of The Coin” about her time at the royal court. Also on the pages of this book is how she played a joke on Elizabeth II.

On her royal trip to Australia in 2006, the Queen was accompanied by her personal assistant and stylist, Angela Kelly. Again and again Kelly remarked in Australia that the royal head of the family really wanted to see the bird species Jägerlieste. This bird species belongs to the so-called kingfishers, which are only native to Australia, Tasmania and New Guinea. But the Queen just wasn’t lucky, Down Under there was no bird of this kind to be seen.

When the royal entourage, including Angela Kelly, made a trip to an Australian market, Kelly saw a stuffed bird of this species and bought it. “I had something in mind that the Queen might like,” she writes. Without further ado, she took the stuffed bird, put it in a cage on the balcony outside her room and called the Queen to tell her what a “strange little gray bird” she had spotted out there.

Elizabeth II is said to have a sense of humor

Elizabeth II was delighted at the sight of the bird and said straight out “Oh, that’s a hunter’s favorite”. When Kelly tried to open the cage door, HRH got nervous: “No, don’t do that, he’ll fly away,” she said. Kelly then turned and tried to keep a neutral face to report to the Queen that the bird was unfortunately dead.

Kelly took the bird in hand, walked up to Elizabeth II and smiled: “April Fool’s Day!”. The echo came immediately: “You are dismissed,” replied the Queen and turned to Prince Philip to lament her sorrow: “You know what she just did to me? Angela made fun of me!” Thankfully, Elizabeth II is known to have a sense of humor, and of course Kelly wasn’t fired for the joke.
