“Squid Game” actress Lee Joo Sil died

Although she had been on theater stages for decades, Lee Joo Sil only achieved international fame through the series “Squid Game”. Now she died of cancer at the age of 81.
The actress Lee Joo Sil is dead. After a heart attack, the South Korean was admitted to a hospital in Uijeongbu, a few kilometers north of the capital Seoul, according to the official news agency Yonhap.
Lees Management indicated stomach cancer as the cause of death. The disease was only diagnosed three months ago. Lee was 81 years old.
International breakthrough until 2024
The actress gave her theater debut as early as 1965. In the following decades she played in many prestigious domestic cinema productions. Lee also had a small supporting role in the award -winning “Train to Busan” (2016).
However, she only made her international breakthrough in old age: Last year she was occupied in the second season of the Netflix success series “Squid Game”. There Lee Joo Sil played the mother of the detective and former police officer Hwang Joon Ho, one of the protagonists.
According to media reports, Lee Joo Sil already fell ill with cancer in the early 1990s. However, despite the low prospects of success according to her breast cancer diagnosis, Lee was considered to be completely healed after a decade.
