“Being with Marlon was exciting. He was an extraordinary man in many ways, but he was also a bad person,” says Moreno. And she adds that, in those years, she was the perfect target for an abuser like him: “I was a real doormat.”
Rita Moreno has given more details, such as how Brando tried to cover up his many lies. “I’d tell him, ‘Marlon, look at me.’ And he’d give me this shit-eating smile. I could read him like an open book: that’s why he loved me, and why he mistreated me in so many ways.”
The situation reached such unsustainable extremes that Moreno tried to end his own life. “I didn’t understand that if I tried to kill the pathetic, sad, downtrodden Rita, the rest of Rita was going to go with me,” he explains. “I really didn’t get it. But that was what this attempt was about.”
After the breakup, Moreno and Brando went back to work together in the night of the next day (1969). Something that he took advantage of to resume his affair. But, Moreno concludes, she was already married, and he had changed a lot: “He had lost a big part of himself, I think. His good part, the good Marlon that Rita loved. It was very complicated. Very, very complicated.”
