Nikolaos de Grèce has only been living in his homeland since December after the former nobles had given up in the namesake. Now there is another reason to celebrate.
A year after his divorce, the former Greek prince Nikolaos in Athens Chrysi Vardinogianni, the daughter of one of the richest Greek shipping families, married in church. The ceremony took place in a small Orthodox church below the Acropolis, the landmark of Athens.
Some members of the royal families of Spain and Denmark took part in the celebration, as reported by the Greek Rundfunk Ertnews. The former Queen of Spain, Sofia, was one of the guests. It is the groom’s aunt.
Nikolaos de Grèce lost Greek citizenship
In 1974 the monarchy in Greece was abolished by referendum. At that time, the members of the former royal family had lost their Greek citizenship because they refused to accept a last name. Nobility titles have not been recognized in the Greek constitution since the abolition of the monarchy.
The former nobles from the Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg house steered in December of last year and took the last name “de Grèce”. This met the most important prerequisite for their naturalization: the acquisition of a Greek last name. Since then Nikolaos and some of his family members have been living again in Greece.
