The Chinese artist Ai Weiwei has been living in exile in Europe for years. However, he cannot travel freely – which he now felt at Zurich Airport.
The Chinese artist Ai Weiwei (67) has been refused to enter Switzerland at Zurich Airport. The cantonal police said that he did not have the necessary entry documents on request.
Ai Weiwei had posted on Instagram that he sleeped on a bench with a blanket in the airport and was waiting to be “deported”. He also shared a video recording from a car that he apparently shot on the airport site.
Ai Weiwei was not arrested, said the police spokesman. He was able to move freely in the transit area of the airport until he returned to the country from which he had entered.
Ai Weiwei has been living in Europe for long in Germany since 2015, now in Great Britain and Portugal. He had fled from China because he was persecuted there. He is a critic of the Communist Party and thus the government.
