In a song she thought a man with a number of swear words – a rebellion in the male -dominated music scene of Mexico. Paquita La del Barrio has now died at the age of 77.
The Mexican singer Paquita La del Barrio died at the age of 77. “She leaves in the hearts of all those who knew and enjoyed her music, indelible traces,” said Monday (local time) in a post on the singer’s Instagram channel.
The singer had eaten normally in her homeland in her homeland in her home country, went to sleep and then no longer woke up, said Francisco Torres, the manager of the singer, the television station NMás. According to reports, she had fought with health problems in recent months.
Resistance to macho culture
Paquita La del Barrio – with a bourgeois name Francisca Viveros Barradas – broke in her five decades long career with conventions of the male -dominated Mexican music scene, wrote the newspaper “El Universal”. In her texts she denounced the macho culture. Her most famous song “Rata de dos Patas” (“rat on two legs”) peppered with swear words has become a “anthem against betrayal and abuse”.
The singer was nominated for three Grammys and honored the Billboard Latin Music Awards for her life’s work in 2021. She was supported at the award in Miami by the Puerto-Rican superstar Bad Bunny, who held the microphone. In allusion to a line from “Rata de dos Patas”, the singer said to him with a wink: “You are useless”.
