According to the speech by a director who speaks of Palestinians at the Berlinale, the state security is investigating the berthlower at the Berlinale. The festival managers learned from the scandal of the previous year.
New vertebrae for a “genocide” statement at the Berlinale: The Hong Kong director Jun Li quoted the anti-Semitic, Propalestinian slogan “From the River to the Sea, Palestine Will” at a premiere. The police security of the State Criminal Police Office, which is responsible for political crimes, is investigating.
The incident is stored differently than the scandal of the 2024 final gala. At that time, those responsible only reacted afterwards when they were massively criticized. This time, the Berlinale is trying to do it differently with a view to anti-Semitism, sets signs and has strong films with Israel reference in the program.
Roth: “Tricia Tuttle takes her responsibility comprehensively”
“The Berlinale has changed under the direction of Tricia Tuttle and sets clear signs this year,” said Minister of Culture Claudia Roth at the request of dpa. “Tricia Tuttle fulfills her responsibility comprehensively.”
But a festival like the Berlinale lives from the contributions of international filmmakers – and some of them have a different view of the conflict. This includes world star Tilda Swinton, who emphasized her support for the BDS campaign at a press conference, which occurred for the boycott of Israeli goods. Swinton said she was “a great admirer”. Even before the Berlinale started, BDS had called for the festival’s boycott.
“Völkermur” speech at the premiere of the film “Queer Panorama”
In the recent incident on Saturday evening, the director Jun Li had read a speech by the actor Erfan Shekarriiz at the premiere of his work “Queer Panorama”, who played in his film. A video recording with parts of the speech was seen on social media.
The speech stated that millions of Palestinians suffocated under Israel’s brutal settler colonial state. “Queer Panorama” does not run in the competition, but in the Panorama side series.
The German government and its cultural institutions, including the Berlinale, made their contribution to apartheid, genocide and the brutal wiping out of the Palestinian people, the speech said. In response from the audience, there were approving, but also significantly critical interjections.
In the article, the propalestinian slogan “From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free” was also heard. The saying is to be classified as clearly anti -Semitic because it is to be understood as a call for the destruction of Israel, displacement and wipe out the Jewish population.
Berlinale boss: We extremely regret the incident
The new director Tuttle announced that the Berlinale regretted the incident. “We pointed out our guests in advance which political statements are particularly sensitive and which may be punishable.”
Roth stated that he exchanged her with Tuttle about the incident. “The Berlinale reacted during the event in Urania and criticized the incident. Afterwards, it had further discussions and illustrates that there is no place for anti -Semitism, racism and group -related misanthropy at this film festival. Increase values and meet their responsibility. “
Tuttle is trying to show solidarity with the Israeli hostages this year. Already at the opening gala she set a sign by wearing a photo of the Israeli hostage David Cunio on the red carpet.
The actor Cunio was represented in 2013 with a film at the Berlinale. Last year, the film festival was asked to stand up for him on the final gala – but this was missed. Tuttle, who wasn’t the Berlinale boss last year, said she wanted to apologize to him and his family.
But she also emphasizes freedom of expression. “Of course I see a red line where it tilts into anti -Semitism,” she said before the festival start. “At the same time, it is important to stay in conversation and allow complexity.”
Central Council expresses itself “stunned”
The Central Council of Jews in Germany wrote on platform X with a view to this year’s Berlinale incident and the Islamist terrorist organization Hamas: “The fact that applause for Hamas slogans is stunned. (…) We assume that one Behavior is sanctioned accordingly. “
The incident arouses memories of the award ceremony in 2024, when individual award winners on the stage had massively criticized Israel’s procedure without mentioning the terrorist attack of the Islamist Hamas from October 2023. At that time, the speech of Apartheid in connection with the situation in the areas occupied by Israel and genocide (genocide) with a view to the approach of the army in Gaza was also speech.
At that time there was applause in the hall during the speech – and those responsible only reacted when there was criticism and allegations of Israel hatred and anti -Semitism after the gala.
Jewish films at this year’s Berlinale
This year the Berlinale takes a look at the situation of Jewish people in various films. On Monday, for example, the premiere of the film “Je n’avais que le néant -” Shoah “par lanzmann”. In it, the director Guillaume Ribot deals with the well-known Holocaust documentary “Shoah” by Claude Lanzmann.
Lanzmann spent twelve years with the production of this film, which enabled a new cinematic view of the Holocaust. His 1985 work is also shown at the Berlinale. Lanzmann’s widow came on stage for the premiere of Ribot’s film.
In the program, two films also ran about the fate of Israeli hostages: “Michtav Le’david” (a letter to David) about David Cunio and “Holding Liat”, who tells of the now released teacher Liat Bein Bein Atzili. She and her family came to the film’s premiere.
