Filmmaker George Armitage died at the age of 82. He had become known for black gangster comedies.
Grief for George Armitage (1942-2025). The well-known Hollywood director, who had made a name for himself, especially with black-humorous comedies, is dead. He died on February 15 in Playa del Rey, California, his son Brent Armitage. A cause of death is not mentioned in US media. Armitage was 82 years old.
Roger Corman helped him to break a career
His best-known directorial work includes the Gangster comedies “Miami Blues” and “Big Pointe Blank” (German title: “A man-a murder”). In the latter work from 1997, John Cusack (58) returns to his home town as the contract killer for the ten -year class reunion of his high school. In “Miami Blues” Alec Baldwins (66) Figure Junior is a police officer. The gangster subsequently stolen other criminals.
Armitage got his start in the film business in the 1970s from the legendary low-budget filmmaker Roger Corman (1926-2024). For example, he had the Blaxploitation film “Hit Man” staged with Tarantino actress Pam Grier (75). After his final directorial work “Hawaii Crime Story” in 2004, Armitage only worked behind the scenes and revised scripts from other filmmakers.
In addition to his son Brent, who also works as a filmmaker, he is also survived by wife Sharon, with whom he was married for 62 years.
