2022 marks the 125th anniversary of the Austrian premiere of Arthur Schnitzler’s three-act play “Freiwild” and its author in the audience of the Stadttheater in Gmunden. So the former Burgtheater director Karin Bergmann wanted to bring a Schnitzler to the stage there in her first season as head of theater and literature at the Salzkammergut Festival. As reported by OÖN, the choice fell on “Der Reigen” (first performed in Budapest in 1912). It is staged by the recently celebrated Franz-Xaver Mayr, the premiere will take place on July 23, Bergmann and cooperation partner Marie Rötzer (director of the Lower Austria State Theater) met yesterday in Gmunden for the first construction test.
“I knew that if I wanted to do theater on this scale here, I would need partners – and I appreciate Marie Rötzer’s work and her exciting theater in St. Pölten very much,” says Bergmann. She rates it as sparkling, insofar as Schnitzler’s erotic dialogues become a kind of “Sex and the City” dramatic highlight of the festival. But she doesn’t forget “Freiwild”: The play is planned as a scenic reading. (pg)
