There were many fashionable flops at the Oscars – but one stays in the memory forever: as a singer Björk, with a swan around her neck, appeared on the red carpet.
So far there have been fashionable flops at the Oscars. But only a few dresses got stuck in the memory as this one. It is March 25, 2001. The 73rd Oscar ceremony takes place in Los Angeles. And suddenly someone steps on the red carpet, who first works as if he was at the wrong event. The Icelandic singer Björk can be photographed with a swan around her neck and a suitable egg bag. And not only ensures a bizarre moment that is legendary: she pretended to put an egg on the red carpet and staged the dress as if it were a real swan.
But not only that: the dress even has its own Wikipedia entry. It was designed by the Macedonian designer Marjan Pejoski. Björk even had two copies made because you couldn’t do it for cleaning. A copy was later auctioned off the International Aid Organization Oxfam on Ebay and brought in $ 9,500. Later, the musician also wore the swan dress on the cover of her album “Vespertine” and various variants on her world tour.
That is why Björk selected the swan dress for the Oscars
The Icelandic singer said in an interview with “CDNOW” after the award: “When I went to the Academy Awards, I was very aware that it would probably be my first and last time. So I thought my contribution should really deal with fertility, and I thought I would bring a few eggs.”

She doesn’t watch many Hollywood films, in Iceland you don’t know that many of them, she said at the time. “Most Hollywood films I know are busby berkeley musicals and … What’s the name of this film with the swimmer? Esther Williams? Something like that, so I thought it was very appropriate to wear a swan. (…) It was a tribute to Busby Berkeley and this kind of elegance,” said Björk. She always provided an unforgettable moment.
