New citizenship for Hollywood legend
Hollywood director James Cameron has been living in New Zealand for many years. Soon he will also receive citizenship.
James Cameron (70) is born in Canadians, but spent a lot of time in the United States because of his work. The director and head behind classics and blockbusters such as “Terminator”, “Titanic” and “Avatar”, especially because of Donald Trump (78), can obviously not imagine living in the United States. He has been calling New Zealand for around 14 years – and should soon receive New Zealand citizenship. It is “immediately upcoming,” says Cameron.
“It means a lot to me. It is something that I worked towards, something for which I had to make sacrifices,” explains the director. “If you uproot your family and pull somewhere, you have to invest, you have to be part of it, you have to earn yourself. I just think you have to earn the right to be in one place.”
The filmmaker who grew up in Canada sees many similarities in the behavior of the people, but in New Zealand he still likes “a little better”. The director lives in Wellington. “I love the city,” he enthuses. “You can’t find an ugly spot in this country, but Wellington is unique.” He was grateful to be a New Zealand citizen.
The US will become “a hollow idea”
Meanwhile, Cameron compares the events in the United States under the presidency of Trump with a car accident. The re-election of the 78-year-old is “terrible” for him: “I see a departure from everything decent. America stands for nothing if it does not stand for what it has stood for in the past. It becomes a hollow idea, and I think they cave out as quickly as they can.”
The effects of the presidency are international – you sit in a boat. One of the best things in life in New Zealand is therefore also not to have to see Trump’s face all the time. “I don’t know if I feel safer here, but I definitely have the feeling that I don’t have to read about it every day on the front page,” he says. At least you only read in New Zealand newspapers on page three of Trump: “I just don’t want to see the face of this guy on the front page of the newspaper.” It is “inevitable in the United States. It is as if you are watching a car accident over and over again”.
