According to media reports, the US government had asked Bucharest to lift the travel restrictions and to return their passports to the Tate brothers. The Tate brothers have both the British and US citizenship.

The Romanian Foreign Minister Emil Hurezeanu was addressed on the edge of the Munich Security Conference in early February by the envoy of US President Donald Trump, Richard Grenell, on the case of the Tate brothers.
