Can fashion be environmentally friendly? Thanks to innovative materials, a change towards more sustainability no longer seems to be utopia.
The fashion industry faces major challenges. Every year, large amounts of textile waste are incurred worldwide, of which only a fraction is recycled. Fast collections of collections and short -lived trends have rapidly increased the resource consumption in the fashion industry in the past decades. A big problem in times of the climate crisis that stimulates thinking and shows how important it is to advance more sustainable alternatives.
But there are developments that encourage confidence: in recent years there has been a great movement towards more sustainable solutions in the textile world. More and more labels are combining modern designs with responsible production methods and innovative materials. These brands already use fabrics of the future.
Armedangels relies on denim innovation
The German label Armedangels has been known for its sustainable alternatives for years. This also shows in its new Detoxdenim collection, which, according to the manufacturer, is already produced without toxic chemicals. From mid-March, Armedangel’s Denim products from the material Saxcell Lyocell will launch. The fiber consists of 30 percent recycled textile waste and 70 percent of FSC-certified wood cell material and enables the recycling of old clothing into new fibers. This reduces the need for new raw materials, while textile waste is used sensibly.
Prada uses recycled nylon
The innovative materials of the future, which often arise from garbage, have already arrived in the luxury sector of fashion. The pioneer is the Italian fashion house Prada with its re-nylon collection, which was first presented in 2019.
At that time, iconic Prada handbags made of Econyl started. It is a regenerated nylon that is made from plastic waste from landfill and from the sea. The material has the great advantage that it can be recycled indefinitely. Prada has now reached the goal of switching the entire collection of conventional nylon to econyl.
Mushroom leather inspires fashion brands
The Bolt Threads company is a pioneer in the field of biomaterials. As a pioneer in this division, the company has drawn attention to itself in recent years with the development of its innovative Myzel base. In 2021, for example, fashion designer Stella McCartney, as a long -time partner of Bolt Threads, presented the world’s first items of clothing from the environmentally friendly mushroom leather – including her iconic Falabella handbag. The sought-after sports brands Adidas and Lululemon have also completed cooperation with the biomaterial brand.
The shoe alternative of rice and corn
While Adidas presents the sneaker classic Stan Smith as a more sustainable alternative from mylo, the German brand The Rice Society from Stuttgart is experimenting with materials such as rice and corn for its vegan shoes. The rice used is, for example, the chaff of a Paella frequency that is only 40 kilometers from the production site. Corn waste from Italy and recycled materials such as coffee or potatoes are also used for the sneaker.
A more sustainable fashion world is possible
These new substances and materials of the future show that it is quite possible that the fashion industry reduces their ecological footprint. Provided that it is ready to promote innovations. A more sustainable and environmentally conscious fashion world does not have to remain a utopia, because it is possible to use resources again and again and to minimize waste and textile waste through newly intended concepts.
