No surprises, but two premieres: for Kieran Culkin and Zoë Saldaña there were the gold boys in the secondary actor categories.
Traditionally, the awarding of one of the secondary actor categories is part of the first official act of the Academy Awards – the 97th edition on the night of March 3rd there was no exception. Also a tradition: Robert Downey Jr. (59), who was able to receive his first Oscar for “Oppenheimer” last year, presented his successor to the gold boy as the “Best Neverseitsteller”. Kieran Culkin (42) was considered a house -high favorite for his part in “A Real Pain” and not only did justice to this role. He also held a charming acceptance speech in which he first paid tribute to one of his competitors.
So he explicitly praised Jeremy Strong (46) in the Trump film “The Apprentice” and thus also gave a subtle political statement. Then he unpacked the anecdote that his wife had apparently believed that he would win the Oscar. When he was winning Emmy around a month and a half ago for “succession”, he was apparently promised that the family could grow to three by another child. The Oscar should now also add number four! So Culkin should have a lot of work in front of him – in and outside the dream factory.
“Best supporting actor” – the other nominees
Edward Norton – “Like a Complete Unknown”
Guy Pearce – “The Brutalist”
Jeremy Strong – “The Apprentice”
Surprise among the secondary actresses?
Since the Joy Randolph (38), who had been awarded for “The Holdovers” last year, was later given the role of handing over the gold boys to the best supporting actress. Here Zoë Saldaña (46) for her representation in “Emilia Pérez” the best victory chances were granted – and she too did justice to the high expectations from the apron.
As for Culkin, it was also the first Oscar win for Saldaña. She also provided the first highly emotional thank -you speech, in which she was close to tears several times. “I am a proud child of immigrant parents,” said Saldaña, especially thanking her mother, who was on site.
