Camilla becomes Queen Consort: Why it’s a nice gesture above all

Queen Elizabeth II is already preparing her family and the monarchy for the time after her reign. Now she has announced that Duchess Camilla will become Queen Consort.

It’s almost typical of Queen Elizabeth II to use the celebratory circumstances of her platinum anniversary to plan for the future. In a speech, she thanked the citizens for the loyalty and support she has received over the decades.

She then added what she hopes for after her passing: “And when the time comes, my son Charles becomes king, I know that you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you gave me ; and it is my sincere wish that when that time comes, Camilla will be known as the Queen Consort while she carries on her own loyal service.”

The queen answered a question that royal experts have been dealing with for a long time. When Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles married 17 years ago, the marriage was fraught with controversy. No one had forgotten that Camilla was Charles’ mistress when he was married to Princess Diana. That she could one day become queen was outrageous to some.

A nice gesture

And so it was said for a long time that Camilla would become the Princess Consort after her husband’s accession to the throne, even if this would have required a change in the law. So far, Prince Charles’ advisors had mostly communicated it that way. But the popularity of the Duchess has increased in recent years. She has become an integral part of the family, not just since the scandals surrounding Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry or Prince Andrew.

And so the Queen’s statement is one thing above all: a beautiful gesture. Any woman at the King’s side automatically becomes a Queen Consort. But why was Prince Philip not known as the King Consort during his lifetime, but as the Prince Consort? The reason for this, there is no other way to put it, is patriarchy. A king is always superior to the queen, while the title of queen can also be symbolic.
