Cologne “crime scene”: trace of a murder case leads in the past

In the past, they celebrated together at techno parties, then the contact broke off. 30 years later they are brought together by Ballauf and Schenk – as a suspect.

A photographer is murdered in his apartment. The Cologne “Tatort” commissioners Max Ballauf (Klaus J. Behrendt) and Freddy Schenk (Dietmar Bär) quickly find a starting point: Three weeks before his death, the victim, Alex Schmitz, had entered the names of several people in an Internet search engine. The commissioners invite them as witnesses.

Soon it turns out: The case leads back into the past. In the 1990s, Christian (Thomas Loibl), Meike (Karoline Eichhorn) and René (Andreas Pietschmann) belonged to the techno scene and met regularly at parties in the legendary “Colonius” tower, high above the roofs of Cologne. Alex, who at that time provided the scene with coke and ecstasy, was also friends with them. But since then the quartet has lost sight of and had no contact.

Filming in an empty telecommunications tower

A good 30 years later, the investigation into the crime Christian, Meike and René brings together again. During the interrogations, ball runs and gives find out that they all hide something and apparently have a common secret. Because in the past another young woman, Gina, belonged to the clique – and that disappeared without a trace.

The first shows the “crime scene” episode “Colonius” this Sunday (March 9, 8:15 p.m.). The 266 meter high telecommunications tower with a former restaurant and viewing platform is a landmark of Cologne. He has been empty for many years and is closed to the public. The filming (director: Charlotte Rolfes, script: Eva and Volker A. Zahn) took place in the building.

The result lives from leaps in time between the 1990s and the present. On the one hand, a wild, psychedelic techno party that gets out of hand. On the other hand, the hours of interrogation in the Presidium that seem almost Kammerspiel. Freddy in particular takes the case emotionally with him, because he was already working at the party in question at the time.

For author Eva Zahn, the focus is on “time” in this episode, as she describes in the press booklet. “What happens to the guilt that someone loads on? Will she be less, just because a younger ego was responsible for the crime? Can a decent life make up for everything afterwards?

Through the narrative style, you experience young people who still have their whole life in front of them – represented by younger actors. And then the same after more than 30 years who try to cope with their fatal decisions in different ways. The result is a fascinating mix and an exciting thriller of a different kind.
