Mangeshkar was admitted with pneumonia last January at the Breach Candy Hospital in the Indian capital and local media added that she also had heart problems.
The artist, dubbed “the queen of melody” by the press and the public, sang mainly songs on movie soundtracks, but also many religious melodies called “bhajans”.
At the time, he was responsible for singers getting royalties instead of a one-time payment thanks to a lonely battle he fought in the 1960s that finally paid off in 2018.
In a tribute to her, the well-remembered actor and film producer Dilip Kumar said: “The way a flower’s fragrance has no color, a flowing spring or a cool breeze belongs to no country, the smile of an innocent child it has no religion, similarly Lata Mangeshkar’s voice is a miracle of nature’s creativity.”
Although his detractors said his voice was too reedy, Mangeshkar first made his way into Marathi films – an Indo-Iranian Indo-European language, spoken in central and western India – and later into Hindi cinema, which was based in what was then called Mumbai. Trained in Hindustani classical music, she also studied the Urdu language, like many lyricists of the 1940s who wrote in that language.
