Hugo Egon Balder no longer smokes – “nobody noticed it”
Nobody else in Germany stands for anarchic entertainment as Hugo Egon Balder. In private, however, he was very disciplined before his 75th birthday.
Moderator Hugo Egon Balder stopped smoking after more than 60 years. The 74-year-old of the dpa said he had already succeeded in saying goodbye to the cigarettes last August. It happened very suddenly. He didn’t need to compensate for nicotine chewing gums or vape pens as compensation.
“My wife said to me: ‘Can you stop coughing?’ Then I asked: ‘Yes, how?’ Then she said: ‘Stop smoking’, ”said Balder. The end of his smoking career was a decided thing-after 62 years. “From one second to the other.” It was suddenly clear to him that he would feel better without the cigarettes. Reason enough to stop.
Hugo Egon Balder: Nobody asks in the pub
Balder sees the effects of this radical decision positively. “I feel better than five years ago when I turned 70,” said the moderator (“Awesome wrong”, “Tutti Frutti”), who turns 75 on March 22nd. “But the joke is that nobody noticed it. Even after three hours in the pub, nobody said to me: ‘Tell me anymore?'” Said Balder. In earlier times, he was “ran out” after a quarter of an hour, even with snow and rain.
“It all falls away now, but no one is noticeable,” said Balder. “However, I feel much better.” He had already reported on his completed smoker career in the “Cologne Treff”.
