The legal dispute between actress Blake Lively and her co-star Justin Baldoni takes a new turn. Baldoni’s defamation action could be threatened.
US actress Blake Lively (37) applied for the defamation of her co-star Justin Baldoni (41). She rely on a Californian law that protects people who raise accusations for sexual harassment from legal consequences. This reported US media. Lively’s lawyers therefore submitted a corresponding application to the Federal Court in New York.
Allegations: sexual harassment and defamation
According to the law from 2023, complaints against people who raise allegations for sexual harassment are only permitted if they are demonstrably wrong or are raised with malicious intent. If the court granted the application, Baldonis would be rejected and he may have to cover Lively’s legal fees, the “Los Angeles Times” reported.
LIVELY (“Gossip Girl”) had shown her co-star Baldoni in December because of sexual harassment when filming the film “only once” and accused him and producer Jamey Heath in a lawsuit to destroy her reputation. Baldoni (“Jane the Virgin”), who also directed the film, reacted with a lawsuit against Lively and her husband Ryan Reynolds (48).
Sharp criticism by Baldoni’s lawyer
In a statement that was available, Baldoni’s lawyer Bryan Freedman called the application “one of the most hideous examples of the abuse of our legal system”. Strict regulations would be enacted to protect innocent people. “Laws are not there to be twisted and bent by privileged elites so that they correspond to their personal ideas,” said Freedman.
