All children should have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, says superstar Ed Sheeran. He calls on the government of his country to act.
Pop star Ed Sheeran (“Bad Habits”) has called on the British government to invest in urgent investments in the musical education of children and adolescents. After “decades of disassembly of music”, the British music training with immediate and long-term financial resources had to be brought back to shape, the 34-year-old demanded in a letter to Prime Minister Keir Strander and several ministers. For this spring, an investment package of £ 250 million (just under EUR 300 million) is needed.
“Learning an instrument and going on stage – whether at school or in a community association – is a luxury today that not every child can afford,” wrote Sheeran. “Music in and outside of school should be for everyone, not just for a few.” Among other things, music in schools had to be promoted as much as sports, and more music teachers would have to be trained.
Sheeran is not alone with his demands: the letter received support from a whole series of British music greats, including Coldplay, Eric Clapton, Harry Styles, Elton John and Stormzy.
