Book fairs are a sensorium for the entire industry. Therefore, the signals you have from are observed closely. The book fair in Leipzig, which runs from today to Sunday, radiates both this year: light and shadow.
On the one hand, the number of exhibitors at the Frankfurt (with 4300 exhibitors) has dropped by 45 to 2040 compared to the previous year. The general location on the book market is also tense, said Peter Kraus from the Cleff, general manager of the German Börsenverein: “In the first months of 2025, sales will be at the level of the previous year.” However, in 2024, 1.7 percent fewer books were sold than in 2023. Due to increased prices, sales still rose slightly by 0.8 percent. It went better in Austria: sales increased by 4.7 percent here.
On the other hand, trade fair director Astrid Böhmisch has the public interest. This year the demand is so great that the ticket sale must be braked for the first time. Only a remaining ticket quota is available for Saturday and Sunday. In the previous year, 283,000 visitors came to the fair and the “Leipzig read”.
