So Camilla becomes Queen or “Queen Consort”, as it is correctly called. The Queen’s clear message on the eve of her historic jubilee is more than a gesture. Parliament’s approval of the new title of Duchess of Cornwall after Queen Elizabeth’s death is a mere formality.

It is the victory of resilience. Possibly because Prince William went from adversary to advocate.

With Harry and William, Camilla had the most emotional critics in the family

The long story of Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla has been told and even filmed thousands of times. Even 30 years after the disclosure of their extramarital affair, the two – and especially they – have numerous critics. The happy comments about the Queen’s statement last weekend were mixed with hate messages against Camilla.

The Duchess of Cornwall’s steadfastness should at least command respect from any observer. Not only because she was one of the most hated people in Britain for a few years, but also because she had the most emotional critics in the new family. Prince Harry and Prince William have blamed Camilla for breaking up their parents’ marriage. She was the reason her beloved Mama Diana suffered for years. The princes could not overcome this for a very long time.

In 1999, Camilla’s sister Annabel celebrated her birthday and the heir to the throne and his longtime lover were photographed together leaving the party at a London hotel for the first time. An accident? Not at all. Since the mid-1990s, the palace had launched an image campaign to make Camilla presentable. Princess Diana’s death initially stalled efforts, but work continued towards the end. In 2001, Charles appeared at a charity event hosted by Camilla. There was the first public kiss on the cheek. Four years later, the couple was allowed to marry.

It was said at the time that Harry and William were happy for their father. Both were seen smiling with their half-siblings after the blessing and civil wedding in Windsor. Nevertheless, the injuries were deeper. The relationship between the young prince and her father had reached a low point. Many Royal reporters from the island reported that there were loud arguments between them. That has only changed in the last few years.

Kate and Meghan brought their husbands closer to their father again

Especially Duchess Kate and later Duchess Meghan made their men approach their father. It is now said that Prince William and Prince Charles have the best relationship in years. Harry felt the same way before he broke with royalty. And Camilla? Diana confidant and Daily Mail columnist Richard Kay and Sussex biographer Omid Scobie told me they consider the Duchess of Cornwall to be her father’s wife. No longer. They do not connect a cordial relationship. The hurts of the past are too deep.

And so it’s a forgiving sign that William endorses the Queen’s message that Camilla should one day be queen. It is doubtful that Elizabeth II would have sent them if the war against her previously hated stepmother was still raging. After all, the Duke of Cambridge is not only her grandson and the son of the future king, but the next but one monarch. The way is paved for the court under a King Charles (or whatever royal name he then chooses). With his “loving wife”, the Queen Camilla, at his side.
