New phones in 2021

New year, new mobile phone – fortunately, consumers don’t have to change their smartphones that quickly. But when a new purchase is pending, it is always good to have an overview of the current generation of smartphones and their technology. After all, it is important to find the right smartphone at the best price.

Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Apple & Co. do not make it easy for consumers to keep track of the current models. The product names are too confused, the release dates of the devices too confusing, and the product range too diverse. Time to bring some clarity.

Samsung

Market leader Samsung traditionally launches its new generation of smartphones at the beginning of the year. The S line marks the upper class at Samsung. That includes , and . Since 2020, buyers have been able to tell by the number in which year the smartphones came onto the market.

The manufacturer is a bit broader with its entry-level and mid-range smartphones, which Samsung marks with an “A”. The Galaxy came into their family in 2021 , , , and added. Logical: the higher the number, the more performance the smartphones promise.

And as if that weren’t enough, Samsung also offers a Galaxy M series, which is priced below the S class and next to or above the A series. This came here in 2021 on the market. Its most striking feature is the huge battery. Otherwise the family still owns that , and the an.

OnePlus

In 2020, OnePlus was the horror of all premium manufacturers. The reason for this was his OnePlus Nord, which offered features such as 5G, 90 Hertz display or a decent camera for less than 400 euros at the time. It is still quiet about a OnePlus Nord successor this year. But that’s not unusual either, because OnePlus usually launches its upper-class killer in the second or third quarter of the year.

The Chinese manufacturer (headquarters: Shenzhen) has presented its top models in 2021. This is that and the . Both offer what you can expect from a top smartphone in 2021: 120 Hertz OLED display, sufficient processor power for the next few years, excellent photo quality and dual SIM.

Xiaomi

Xiaomi, along with Samsung, is probably the manufacturer that launched the heaviest guns to date in 2021: It feels like a new smartphone from the Chinese comes onto the market every month. Xiaomi’s product range is just as confusing as that of Samsung. In addition to its Mi series, Xiaomi also launches cheaper smartphones. Consumers recognize them by the identifier “Redmi” and “Poco”.

In 2021, the Xiaomi company came up with that, ,, and Mi 11 Ultra on the market. For price-conscious buyers, the manufacturer has the Redmi Note 10S, , , and the in the portfolio. The “Pocos” are real value for money in 2021. With the and the Xiaomi launched two representatives on the market in March, which are priced around 100 euros apart.

Huawei

Huawei is still suffering from the trade dispute with the US. So far, the company has not revealed any new features. Unusual, because Huawei announced the P40 in March last year. The starting point of the successor P50 is just as uncertain as the question of whether it will be equipped with Google services. Huawei remains the big question mark in smartphone heaven in 2021.

Apple

Apple wouldn’t be Apple if the Cupertino tech giant adjusted to its competition’s release cycle. The US company traditionally presents its new smartphones in the fall of the year. Accordingly, there has been little to report on Apple’s innovations so far. After all, the Californians have achieved with their current twelfth generation iPhones what has been the standard of Samsung’s top models for ten years: Both, , and have an OLED display. What the iPhone 13 will be able to do is not yet known.

New Cell Phones 2021: Foldable Smartphones

Exotic smartphone buyers are also looking forward to a greater variety of folding devices in 2021. Microsoft’s Surface Duo is somewhere between tablet and smartphone, made nostalgics happy in early 2020. The Galaxy Z Flip from Samsung is similar to it. The South Koreans started the display folder trend in 2019 with their Galaxy Z Fold, which will be released in 2020 from was replaced.

In 2021, Xiaomi was the first manufacturer to introduce a new folding smartphone. The Mi Mix Fold came on the market in March 2021 – at least the Chinese one, because the cell phone is not (yet) available in Europe. It is uncertain whether this will ever be the case. Xiaomi is still silent on this. Samsung has rumored a Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3, but none of the models have been confirmed yet. In addition, the manufacturer is probably working on a cheap foldable smartphone. But that is nothing more than a rumor.

A new cell phone must be able to do that in 2021

What does a new smartphone have to have at least in 2021? 2021 will be dominated by the new 5G radio standard. Last year, manufacturers mostly only built 5G-capable chips into their top-of-the-range models. In the meantime, however, there are also more and more affordable 5G smartphones such as the Oppo Reno4 Z 5G, which costs around 260 euros.

In addition, 120 Hertz screens are becoming increasingly affordable. The Poco X3 Pro, for example, impresses with such a display and that for a price of around 250 euros. Unfortunately, the display of the Poco X3 Pro is based on LCD technology. On the other hand, an OLED display delivers a deeper black and better contrasts. But this is still withheld from the somewhat more expensive smartphones this year. Tech giant Apple, for example, needed up to the current iPhone generation to consistently give its devices OLED displays.

When it comes to cameras, manufacturers are increasingly relying on triple or quad lenses. This is especially helpful for different types of photos. Macro lenses, for example, are useful for photographers who want to highlight small objects such as insects on a flower. Wide-angle lenses, on the other hand, shoot great pictures of landscapes. The best example would be picturesque mountain ranges in the Alps.

And the cameras are also becoming increasingly high-resolution. However, it should be said that in smartphone photography, the software is just as important for the quality of the photos as the hardware. And this is exactly where Samsung, Apple and Google usually have their noses ahead of the competition from China.
