Emigration felt like “failure”

After a year and a half in Sweden, Isabell Horn is back in Germany with her family. The reason: homesickness and language barriers.

In the summer of 2023, Isabell Horn (41) took a big step in the summer of 2023 with her partner Jens and the two children together Ella (7) and Fritz (5): the family grabbed their suitcases and moved to Sweden. After a vacation, the family of four had fallen in love with the Scandinavian country and decided to start a new life there. But as so often in life, it happens differently than planned – after a year and a half, the former “GZSZ” actress has now been returned to Germany.

“You don’t really want to give up this dream. I also had the feeling: Okay, now we have failed here. I didn’t want to give up so quickly,” admits the actress. Despite the concerns that occurred after a year, she had given her life in Scandinavia a chance for six months. But over time she became aware: “There is no giving up, just another way.”

Family and friends were missing too much

Several factors played a role in the decision to return to Germany. Above all, however, the homesickness: “We then found that the family simply lacks. The friends are missing. And some things are much more difficult than expected,” said Horn.

In addition to homesickness, another thing made it another matter in Sweden: Find a connection. “I actually have to say to find new friends for us, generally all the social contacts, that was anything but easy,” recalls Isabell Horn. Without talking Swedish, it is difficult in the country to establish new acquaintances. There were even situations in which she felt excluded. Despite the challenges, the spouses do not regret the time in Sweden. It was an “unforgettable time”. But: “Living there is no longer an option for us.”

Another new life in Berlin

Already last December, Isabell Horn had informed her followers that she would reverse the emigration. “After a wonderful time in Sweden, we are now facing a turning point: A chapter full of unforgettable memories closes, but at the same time a new window opens that fulfills us with anticipation and curiosity,” she wrote about a video of the moving car at the time.

Now the family has been back in Germany for eight weeks and lives in a rented house on the edge of Berlin. “We feel great here. We’re not here that long yet, but that’s exactly the right place,” explains Horn – even if the boxes are not yet unpacked. However, the current home with a large garden is only a temporary solution. For many years, the couple have had a property nearby, where their family home is to be built soon.
