Today, the world has taken a gigantic turn and the cultural artists and managers of Latin America, who until yesterday aspired to conquer Paris and then, New York, celebrate the entrance to Qatar, one of the most powerful countries in the Middle East. In April, a great show art, “Latin American”a set of 170 first -level works belonging to the Malba Museum and the private collection of Eduardo Costantiniwill be exhibited at the National Museum of Qatar, in the beautiful building designed by Jean Nouvel. The president of the Malba Foundation since 2021, Teresa Bulgheronileads this ambitious project. And in a dialogue with this newspaper, observe that “A new path opens for the art of Latin America”
Bulgheroni He won visibility more than 20 years ago with the memorable exhibition of the “Russian avant -garde” and the “Icons” which brought Buenos Aires from several Russian museums and the historic Kremlin of Moscow. Today, remember those exhibitions and referring to those loans, clarifies: “Relationships must be taken. With this objective I sent Russia a great exhibition of ‘Argentine silverware”. Journalist: How did the proposal to exhibit in Qatar works Summit of the Heritage of Malba and Eduardo Costantini arise?
Teresa Bulgheroni: From the World Cup people began to talk about the Arab world. I was several times in Abu Dabi and Dubai. He had not reached Qatar, but the cultural preparation of the Sheikha al Mayassa Bint Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, Emir’s sister, is known in the world. She deals with the artistic activities and her sister of education. Since 2022 he was talking with some contacts in the Middle East about the possibility of doing something with Malba and finally Qatar’s proposal was a winner. In addition, the curator of the Qatar Museum, Zeina Arida, could see in Buenos Aires the third eye exhibition, which brings together the best of the collections of Malba and Eduardo, and was in love. After that match, at the last Venice Biennale I entered the bar that is in the gardens. There was a tumult and when I asked permission to look at the showcase and choose a cake, right there, we met again. “Malba!” The curator told me surprised. And I, without hesitation, replied “Qatar!”
Q: Was this encounter decisive?
TB: After that meeting, in November we agreed to participate in the exhibition in association with Qatar Museums, within the framework of the year of the Qatar-Argentina-Chile 2025 culture. Every year, for more than a decade, in Qatar they choose one or two countries to present their art, tourism, sports and gastronomy. Exchanges and workshops are held, there are exhibition rooms and a photography festival. In Qatar they know that culture favors understanding.
Q: Do you think, like Costantini, that you can also open almost all doors?
TB: The links between our region and the Arab world have deep roots, visible both in history and in everyday life. For example, they give much importance to family, friendship and hospitality, like us. This collaboration gives us a unique opportunity to explore these connections from art and generate new spaces for mutual reflection and understanding. It is a new path that opens.
Q: And why did they advance the date from November to April?
TB: This summer came a small delegation with the proposal that the Latin American exhibition opened the exhibition season of the year of the culture of Argentina and Chile. Thus the sample that will be there for three months was advanced. It was thanks to the curators of the Sample Issa Al Shirawi, of Qatar, and the curator in chief of the Malba, María Amalia García, and the two teams of Malba and Qatar that this could reach fruition. It is a dream that came true. Both teams worked to gather works that from the beginning of the 20th century to the present account of what Latin American identity is.
Q: It is not the first proposal to exhibit its great works that the Malba receives, a museum that for years avoided lending its treasures, except for exceptional cases.
TB: Today we are in a very different situation: Malba’s collection has increased, has almost 800 works, and Eduardo Costantini’s personal collection also increased. Of course I thank Sheikha to Mayassa Bint Hamad Al Thani for choosing Malba for this collaboration, in addition to his immense support. And also Eduardo who from the first moment accepted with enthusiasm to embark on this ambitious project to reach the Middle East. We believe that Malba must show our culture on the international stage and that this exhibition is the first step of an enriching and lasting relationship.
Q: What are, according to your criteria, the main works that will be seen in Qatar?
TB: Travel Frida Kahlo with her “Self -portrait with Chango and Loro” and Diego Rivera with the “dance in Tehuantepec”. Then, include the “puzzle” of Jorge de la Vega, “Juanito asleep” by Antonio Berni, “Omini Obini” by Wifredo Lam, “Harmony” of Remedios Varo, the “street scene or street of Paris or constructive” by Joaquín Torres-García “and” The composition with green tones “by Roberto Matta, among many great works. In addition, in the courtyard of the National Museum of Qatar, They will install “The sculpture of dreams” that Marta Minujín presented in Times Square
