The football star Mats Hummels ends in summer as an active player. The 2014 world champion announced his career end via Instagram.
Mats Hummels (36) hangs up his football shoes. The 2014 world champion announced this in an emotional video statement. The professional of AS Rome will no longer be on the pitch as an active player after this season. “After 18 years and so many things that football gave me, I will end my career this summer,” said Hummels. For him, the moment is now that no footballer could get around.
The social media farewell video is garnished with some of the most important scenes from its career, including in the jersey of FC Bayern Munich, AS Rome and Borussia Dortmund-and of course also in the dress of the German national team. His journey was “extraordinary”, says Hummels.
“That makes me emotionally, that will make me even more emotional if it is really not there anymore,” says the defender. It was “incredibly beautiful” to have had such a career and not to compare anything – not to replace anything, Hummels continues. That is nice, but at the same time also scary, because he will be missing the feeling with the fans “cursed”.
One of the biggest players in the Dortmund history
In the comments, his Dortmund ex-colleague Nico Schlotterbeck (25) already spoke up and spoke about Hummels of his “teacher”. Borussia Dortmund also wrote his former defense chief. He was one of the greatest players in the club’s history. One is ivy about your achievements, his successes and your career.
Mats Hummels already played for FC Bayern Munich in youth, in which he was initially denied the final breakthrough among the professionals. From 2008 to 2016 Hummels laced his shoes for Borussia Dortmund and matured there to one of the best central defenders in the world. After returning to Munich, he moved back to the Ruhrpott in 2019. In the summer of 2024, he signed a contract with the traditional Italian association AS Rome. Mats Hummels became world champion in 2014, he also won the German championship five times and three times the DFB Cup.
