Mats Hummels (36) soon says goodbye to professional football. “After over 18 years and so many things that football gave me, I will end my career this summer,” said the 2014 world champion on Friday. His journey was “extraordinary”, said Hummels in the clip. Numerous colleagues and companions have spoken out in the past few hours to honor the football professional.
The end of an “incredible career”
“An incredible career,” commented football pensioners Bastian Schweinsteiger (40) in the comments. He wish Hummels “only the best” for his future. Thomas Müller (35), who leaves FC Bayern Munich in summer, wrote with tear -laughing emojis: “Homer, started in Aschheim on the right track.” Nico Schlotterbeck (25) described his football colleague as “teacher”.
Jérôme Boateng (36) expressed his “respect”. It was “fun to play with you and against you. All the best for the future.” Meanwhile, Marco Reus (35) described him in English as “legend”. He will miss Hummel’s passports. “Thanks for everything, my friend,” wrote Lukas Podolski (39).
Hummels’ former club Borussia Dortmund said in the comments: “One of the biggest players in our club history is over – your career was unique, Mats! We bow to your performance, your success and your career. Forever Borusse! Forever a black and yellow legend!” The AS Roma at a “legend”.
“Role model for a whole generation of defenders”
“Mats Hummels set international standards in his best years and has become a role model for a whole generation of defenders,” became national coach Julian Nagelsmann (37). “Even after the 2014 World Cup title, in which he was a central pillar of the team, many players benefited from his experience and tactical understanding.
Football legend and DFB sports director Rudi Völler (64) described Hummels as “one of the formative faces in a very successful time of the national team and the DFB”. DFB President Bernd Neuendorf (63) thanked him “for his great services”.
Ex-wife Cathy Hummels for “beautiful memories” grateful
His ex-wife Cathy Hummels (37), with whom he has a son together, also spoke up. In the Instagram comments she wrote: “The next Hummels is in the starting blocks. It was a pleasure for me to be able to accompany you on your career for so many years. Every career comes to an end: “I was able to collect so many beautiful memories myself, for which I am Mats very grateful. I will be a lifetime. I also have tears in my eyes.”
