In the mid-1970s, Catherine Deneuve lived in the same house as opera legend Maria Callas. In an interview, the French actress remembers this unusual neighborhood.
Two icons under one roof: actress Catherine Deneuve (81) remembers a special neighborhood with opera legend Maria Callas. In the mid-1970s, she lived in the same Parisian house as the singer, said Deneuve of the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” (Saturday edition). She cleans up with a myth.
It is not true that we used to lay on the floor and press our ears to hear them singing, Deneuve said. “Rather, we heard her through the chimney shaft. She hadn’t thought of it when she sounded her apartment at the time.”
Deneuve is only partly interested in the past
An anecdote that is a quick look back. Basically, she is not a particularly nostalgic person, she emphasized. “I just like to live in the present.” The past? Are only partly interested in a limited extent.
Even her own films hardly watch them anymore. “If one of my films runs on TV while switching through, I may get stuck briefly. But after ten minutes at the latest I usually make it out.”
Not because she cannot endure herself. But, as she adds in the interview: “Because I already have too little time for all the other great films that I still want to see. So why should I waste them for my own?”
