A young influencer and nurse, Hailey Marie Okula, died of amniotic fluid embolism during the birth of her son. She was only 33 years old.
Hailey Marie Okula is dead, which her husband Matthew Okula announced on social media. “With the heaviest heart I share the shocking news of the unexpected death of my wonderful wife Hailey Marie Okula due to complications at birth,” he wrote on her account. “Words cannot describe the deep loss I feel.” The baby, a little boy named Crew, survived.

Hailey Marie Okula had long had an unfulfilled desire to have children
The couple had tried to get a child together for two years. Hailey Okula openly reported on Instagram about the couple’s infertility. Both have the “same genetic illness”, she wrote in a post. A protracted fertility treatment then helped the longed-for pregnancy, which she made public in September 2024.
On March 31, 2025, Okula gave birth to the little crew. Then one of the most beautiful life became one of the most difficult life from one of the most beautiful moments. Shortly after the successful caesarean section, a doctor informed him that his wife had to be resolved, Okula says in an interview with Fox 11 Los Angeles. “She had a cardiac arrest. The doctors said that it was a very, very rare complication known as amniotic fluid embolism,” said Okula. The mother was still able to see her son for the “fraction of a second”, says Okula visibly emotionally. He holds the little crew in his arms.
An amniotic fluid embolism is a rare but life -threatening complication at birth. It occurs at two to eight out of 100,000 births, according to the “Deutsche Kärzteblatt”. With a mortality rate of eleven to 44 percent, it is one of the leading causes of mothers.
Matthew Okula has no easy time. He is a fireman in Los Angeles and fought the forest fires at the beginning of the year. Now acquaintances have launched a fundraising campaign for the small family, which is intended to support the father in the cost of living and the funeral.
“She would have been the greatest mother,” Matthew Okula writes about his wife on Instagram. “Your spirit, courage and love will live on in our son and in everyone whose life has touched.”
