For every album of the rock band Blondie, he was sitting on drums – from the beginning in the 1970s to the comeback around 20 years later. Now Clem Burke has died. His bandmates mourn.
Clem Burke, drummer of the US rock band Blondie (“Heart of Glass”), is dead. He died on Sunday at the age of 70, reported media from the USA and Great Britain, citing a message and a spokesman for the band. Burke had cancer.
“Clem was not just a drummer, he was the heartbeat of Blondie,” wrote blondie lead singer Debbie Harry and guitarist Chris Stein on the band’s website. “His talent, his energy and passion for music were unsurpassed and his contribution to our sound and success is immeasurable.”
World career in two files
The band Blondie, founded in New York in 1974, is considered a pioneer of the US new wave and punk movement of the late 1970s. In 1978 the group celebrated their big breakthrough with the album “Parallel Lines” and the hits “One Way Or Another” and “Heart of Glass”. In 1982 the band dissolved, but returned with the world hit “Maria” in 1999. Drummer Burke is represented on all eleven studio albums of the band before and after the separation.
Burke was a “source of inspiration”, both on the stage and away from it, it said in the announcement of the band. “His lively spirit, his contagious enthusiasm and his rock -solid work morality touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.”
