The creator of Black Mirror, Charlie Brookergave new details of the return from the series to Netflix For its seventh season.
Brooker talked about the sequel to the episode of the fourth season “USS Callister”, his tribute to black and white cinema and AI observation with “impressive astonishment and growing terror.”
“Of all the stories we have made, it ended as if we were preparing for the sequel,” Broker said in dialogue with the Deadline portal. “It went through several versions, but in the end we turned it into a feature film within the season. It took us a long time to organize it: we had the pandemic, the scriptwriters and then we had to coordinate the agendas of alland that was like a Rubik cube in a monocycle. ”
The sequel, “Uss Callister: Into Infinity”is the final episode of next season 7 and presents most of the cast that returns, except for Jesse Plemons and Michaela Coel. “Robert Daly has died, but now the USS Callister crew, led by Captain Nanette Cole (Cristin Milioti), is stranded in an infinite virtual universe, struggling to survive against 30 million players, “says the synopsis.
Having spent much of his last 15 years writing an anthology series, Brooker said he enjoyed the opportunity to write for the same characters a second time.
On old films and AI
Brooker said that season 7 differs more than last season than from the previous series of Black Mirror, which have been transmitted for almost 15 years, first in Channel 4 and then in Netflix.
“The sixth season was like ‘Red Mirror’ in the sense that we had more terror and less emphasis on technological stories”Brooker added. “I knew from the beginning that it would be more similar to the original Black Mirror, no doubt in terms of that technological approach. So, in a way, there is less difference between the seventh season and, say, the third or the second, than between the seventh and the sixth.”
As always, some episodes are “a little shocking” while others have a “slightly different and more reflective record,” Broker explained. On the latter he cited two episodes that pay tribute to ancient technology: “Hotel Reverie”which deals with a new immersive version of a British film in black and white, and “Eulogy”on an isolated man (Paul Giamatti) to which an innovative system is presented that allows users to enter old photographs.
Regarding these two, Brooker said he was inspired by the documentary Get Back about The Beatles of Peter Jacksonwhich remasted hours and hours of ancient material of the FAB Four.
Artificial intelligence will appear frequently in season 7 and, having been himself part of the 2023 writers strike, Brooker has had time to reflect on the impact of the episode of season 6 “Joan Is Awful”which began to develop before his eyes when the AI security barriers became a key part of the negotiations between WGA and SAG-AFTRA.
“About a month after finishing [“Joan es Horrible”]chatgpt was launched and it was madness that coincided with the strikes, “he added.” The debate has been fascinating. “
Brooker addresses the advances of AI with a mixture of growing amazement and horror. “I see the value of AI as a tool, but I think humanity should design tools to use humansand I worry that people begin to exclude people from the equation. “
The seventh season of Black Mirror He arrives in Netflix on April 10.
