Role model footballer: How important it is to have a drink break while running

We know it from the European Championship: footballers who interrupt the game to drink water. How is it actually when running? Even there, the supply of fluids is important when it is hot – but contrary to what many think

Running is healthy. No doubt. But what about when the temperature – as in the last few days – rises to record highs? Should you skip your shoes and hope to cool off in the shade?

First of all, the all-clear: A warm summer is no reason to completely forego endurance training in the fresh air. Scientists and medical professionals agree on this. Runners up to 25 degrees – beyond the usual sun protection – do not have to take any special precautions. If the thermometer rises towards the 30 degree mark, you can still walk. But you have to actively prepare for the run. Because training at such a high temperature is extremely demanding on the circulatory system and body, and performance decreases. In the new episode of the podcast “She’s running. He’s running.” let’s deal with this very subject.

Even the type of socks is important in summer

My co-host Mike Kleiss, for example, loves to run for a long time, even in high temperatures. “With the right preparation, this is also easy to do,” he says. As a science editor, I warn against it: “If you run in the heat, you risk your health. You should definitely take a step out of the way.” Adequate hydration is of course key, but there are many other factors that runners should pay attention to, especially in summer.

We talk about our own experiences – and give lots of tips on how to get through the summer time safely and healthily. Among other things, we reveal which sunscreen is suitable for runners. Believe me, there is hardly anything more uncomfortable than when sunscreen trickles into your eyes with your sweat. We talk about how you can tell that the body is overheating. And why even the choice of socks determines whether you can get through the summer run well. Have a listen. We look forward to you.
